This is the structure that houses the ULT-SPM. The frame is made of solid wood (ash, like baseball bats) and sits on three active air cushions to prevent any external mechanical vibrations from entering the system.
Shown here is the dilution insert that fits down inside the magnet and will eventually support the AFM body.
A close-up of the dilution unit. Don't touch.
The homemade Gas Handeling System. Analogous to the human body's circulatory system, this unit controls the flow of Helium 3 and 4 through the refrigerator.
A shot of the AFM body being machined by the CNC tool in the machine shop. The body is made of the glass ceramic Macor and is only about 2 inches in diameter, small enough to fit inside the bore of the 16 T magnet.
